WARNING HALLOWEEN HeaderWell even thought Warning Radio has been more or less DEAD for just about a year I couldn’t resist getting in on the act again this year and creating another Halloween mix. Mostly because last year I had so many songs that I did not include on the first Halloween Special but in reality I really just wanted an excuse to use a the sound clip “I Got A Rock” from the Peanuts The Great Pumpkin. Enjoy the mix and weather you are taking in a party, heading out to a bar or trekking the neighborhood with the kids be safe and have fun.

NEVER MIND THE MAINSTREAM

In 1991 MTV and Rhino Records teamed up for 120’s Minutes excellent compilation NEVER MIND THE MAINSTREAM. The 2 CD set gathered up several of the long running show’s mainstays as well as some of the biggest tracks in late 80’s early 90’s indie and alternative complete with photos and band bio’s from the shows long time host Dave Kendall.

I bought both CD’s at my local record store when they came out and they are still in my collection. Sure the comps do not include any deep cuts or rare tracks but both CD’s not only rattle through hit after hit with some of the powerhouse bands in classic college rock but the set greatly show just how diverse MTV’s world of 120 Minutes could be.

WELL SHOULD I????

No not another post about 120 Minutes! Taking a look back 2011 was a pretty eventful one for classic alternative. From with the 20th anniversities of classic reissues such as Nevermind, Actung Baby, and Primal Scream’s Screamadelica. To big new events about the break up of R.E.M. and the announcement of The Stone Roses getting back at it for some gigs (and possible new record) and finally the debut of Spotify in America.

So what’s on tap for 2012? With the slew of more reissues sure to be coming down the pike and some much anticipated shows, here are a few highlights of whats to come in the new year in the  world of classic alternative and new wave.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS celebrate the 30th anniversary of their second album Lincoln. TMBG are set to embark on a full US tour (in support of a new album) and will perform the entire album Lincoln in L.A. and Atlanta check. Details HERE

RHINO RECORDS who are never short on a more reissues than anyone can shake a stick at have a fine roster will be at it again in 2012 with some real heavy hitters including Ministry, Ramones,INXS, Depeche Mode and many more Details HERE

BEGGARS ARCHIVE is also getting in on the act with a number of classic reissues and best of collections as well. Highlights include best of comps from the Go-Betweens and Belly as well as reissues from Cocteau Twins, Beck, Bauhaus and the Charlatans.

But of course probably the biggest and most anticipated event to look forward to is the Stone Roses reunion gigs. I’m crossing all my fingers (and toes) the boys decide to bring the tour to america!

Best of luck in 2012 folks and don’t be afraid to let us know what you are most looking forward to this year.

BACK IN BUSINESS!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 13, 2011 by matthewrubbish

Well I guess I’m not really back in business cause I never really went anywhere but I have been on a bit of a hiatus from the blog. The usual things work, wife, dog etc. the sort stuff the older people that frequent the blog will understand. Some of the “mature” folks will call it life but I think I can better describe it as the crap that keeps me from doing things I really like doing such as drinking beer, listing to tunes and basically goofing off.

Anyway, more on the alternative/indie Warning radio thing that keeps the few people who do read the blog coming back. I am working on episode 009 of Warning Radio and I have a special eposode in the works for the big 10th program as well!!

Till then this video isn’t in the usual Warning vein but def check it out cause it gives a not so mysterious clue to one of the bands/songs featured on the soon to be posted 9th episode of Warning Radio. Enjoy!!

Also,Warning Radio episode 008 is still up so check it out if you haven’t already. Click HERE to get it.

PAVEMENT ON ACE OF CAKES!

Posted in Uncategorized on January 19, 2011 by matthewrubbish

Here is a bit o’ news that came to me as a surprise. Early 90’s indie band Pavement are to appear on the Food Network program Ace Of Cakes. The show that features Baltimore’s own Charm City Cakes.

Not a huge fan of the show but being from Baltimore (though not originally) I’ll probably check it out. Should be interesting as to why the hell they will be there at least. The program airs in the US this Thursday evening (1/20) at 10pm eastern/9pm central.

Check out this awesome live clip of Pavement performing Summer Babe from the excellent LP Slanted And Enchanted
