WARNINGWOW! Due to the response outta people from the recent alternative classics covers mix I thought “what the hell” I might as well keep it going. Basically when I started to compile all the tracks for the covers podcasts I started a spotify playlist and kept adding to it as I would think of possible songs to add to the mix.

So since there were quite a number of songs that didn’t make the cut on the 45 minute podcast, I thought I’d pass along the rest of playlist.

And of course another BONUS video from the AV Club

Whether true to the original or a completely new take I’ve always been a sucker for cover songs. I couldnt tell you how many mixtapes I created for people back in the day comprised completely of covers. I also have a funny (slightly embarrassing) story that I will spare you about knocking back beer after beer in a basement bar in Montreal because of a Creedence cover band. Damn that Molson Export!

Not a huge milestone but I had been thinking for a while for a theme for Warning Radio’s 10th podcast and the covers idea was a bit of a no brainer so I went with it. This time though I decided to mix it up a bit and not only include some of Warning Radio’s most well known artists covering  tunes, I mixed in a few newer bands that I dig tackling some alternative classics.

WARNING RADIO PODCAST 010 TRACK LISTING

WE COULD TURN THESE COATS INTO MINI SKIRTS

Pretty excited about this one. To celebrate the 20th year anniversary, the 1991 Sonic Youth tour documentary The Year Punk Broke is finally getting a DVD release. Universal music is set to release the tour doc which follows SY around Europe with tour openers Nirvana and appearances from Mudhoney, Babes In Toyland, The Ramones and more. The DVD will also contain bonus performances and footage.

Hard to express fully just how important this movie was and in my opinion a real behind the scenes look into the burgeoning alternative music scene as well as just how much of a part Sonic Youth played on a culture about to explode. And always great to see those rare glimpses of the pre stardom Nirvana who had no idea they were about to turn the music world upside down. Not sure on the release date yet but I’ll be sure to keep ya posted. Check out this clip from the move of some back stage scenes and Nirvana performing Polly. If you can’t wait check out more clips on You Tube, there are plenty floating around.

BLOGGIN AINT EASY & MATADOR TURNS 21!

Posted in MATADOR RECORDS, SONIC YOUTH on October 5, 2010 by matthewrubbish

So yeah, It seems that I’ve been having a difficult time lately comin’ up with regular posts for the Warning blog. What can I say other than “Hey, bloggin’ aint easy” I mean I’d like to think that I come up with interesting posts so that is what makes it hard at times. Do I just throw up a few old viddies or nick a post off of another blog? I try not too but hey, it happens.

So what’s new? Anyone out there lucky enough to attend the Matador Records birthday party in Vegas this past weekend? The line up was pretty killer and chocked full ofclassic Matador bands such as Pavement, Jon Spencer and Superchunk but also filled in nicely with a newer acts as well.

Everything I read said Sonic Youth were far an away the highlight of the 3 day festival which doesn’t surprise me. I’ve seen ’em twice and both were killer performances. How those guys still do it is beyond. me but they do and that’s what makes them great.

So if you were there I’d love to hear from ya. What were your highlights? Any surprise appearances? Anyone you were really excited to see but were a bit of a letdown? Any word that this kind of birthday bash will be a regular thing for the label? Gimmie the scoop. Here’s a nice article from VANITY FAIR ARTICLE i found. And live performance of Bull In The Heather by Sonic Youth from the party. Seems like a great time
