WARNING HALLOWEEN HeaderWell even thought Warning Radio has been more or less DEAD for just about a year I couldn’t resist getting in on the act again this year and creating another Halloween mix. Mostly because last year I had so many songs that I did not include on the first Halloween Special but in reality I really just wanted an excuse to use a the sound clip “I Got A Rock” from the Peanuts The Great Pumpkin. Enjoy the mix and weather you are taking in a party, heading out to a bar or trekking the neighborhood with the kids be safe and have fun.

WARNING HALLOWEEN HeaderI’ve been kicking around the idea of doing a halloween podcast for a few years. Halloween mixes are not uncommon and this year I could not resist getting in on the act. I mean it’s kind of a no brainer. With bands like Bauhaus, Joy Division and countless other darkwave and electro/industrial bands to choose from it was begging to be done. I didn’t stray too far from some of the alternative classics that come to mind when talking about a Halloween mix but I threw in just enough other tunes in to keep it fresh. Enjoy the mix for a limited time and look for Warning Radio Episode 011 coming very soon.

Happy Halloween,
Matthew Rubbish

coverOk first, I’m going to say this is going to be my last post concerning covers (for a while anyway) and second, though there are many it would be very difficult for anyone to convince me of a band that has had a bigger influence on classic alternative, indie and new wave music than The Velvet Underground. Being that VU are and have been one of my favorite bands for a very long time I know I’m a little biased in this statement but I don’t think I’m alone.

So when I almost included The Cowboy Junkies mellowed out version of Sweet Jane to round off the recent covers podcast I began to think of the number of other Warning Radio artists who have covered The Velvet Underground and it wasn’t hard to quickly build a playlist.  From the Primitives (Which I’m guessing is a nod to a name used by a Pre-Velvet Underground Lou Reed project) to Psychic TV’s drugged out version of Foggy Notion (complete with fictitious conversation between Candy Darling and Andy Warhol) this by no means a complete list but a nice sample of a few classic alternative artists heavily influenced by The Velvet Underground.

HACIENDA GIG FOOTAGE

File this under the pretty fuckin awesome category. I guess I won’ t wast too much time and just link you to the details but Factory Records and Ikon have teamed up and compiled a bunch of footage of the early days at the famous Manchester hotspot. Most of the footage is from the early days at the club and some dating as far back as 1982!

Some of the acts that can be seen include Echo & The Bunnymen, Bauhaus, A Certain Ratio, ESG, Nick Cave, Violent Femmes and many more!

Click HERE to get all the details on the footage and read more about Ikon

And what the hell check out New Order performing live at the Hacienda in 1985. Damn that looks like a lot of fun!

(NEW) NEW ORDER

Posted in NEW ORDER/JOY DIVISION on May 19, 2011 by matthewrubbish

Well not exactly new. But check out the previously unreleased New Order track “Hellbent”. The song appears on the soon to be release collection Total the first ever Joy Division/New Order hits collection. Check out the track HERE.

Killer album art too designed by none other than the legendary Peter Saville with Howard Wakfield who worked along side the longtime Joy Division/New Order/Factory Records designer during the early 90’s and is back collaborating again with the design firm Studio Parris Wakfield. If you are fan of Saville’s work and/or design geek like me as check out THIS LINK for more info and images
