coverOk first, I’m going to say this is going to be my last post concerning covers (for a while anyway) and second, though there are many it would be very difficult for anyone to convince me of a band that has had a bigger influence on classic alternative, indie and new wave music than The Velvet Underground. Being that VU are and have been one of my favorite bands for a very long time I know I’m a little biased in this statement but I don’t think I’m alone.

So when I almost included The Cowboy Junkies mellowed out version of Sweet Jane to round off the recent covers podcast I began to think of the number of other Warning Radio artists who have covered The Velvet Underground and it wasn’t hard to quickly build a playlist.  From the Primitives (Which I’m guessing is a nod to a name used by a Pre-Velvet Underground Lou Reed project) to Psychic TV’s drugged out version of Foggy Notion (complete with fictitious conversation between Candy Darling and Andy Warhol) this by no means a complete list but a nice sample of a few classic alternative artists heavily influenced by The Velvet Underground.

COVERS 2!

WARNINGWOW! Due to the response outta people from the recent alternative classics covers mix I thought “what the hell” I might as well keep it going. Basically when I started to compile all the tracks for the covers podcasts I started a spotify playlist and kept adding to it as I would think of possible songs to add to the mix.

So since there were quite a number of songs that didn’t make the cut on the 45 minute podcast, I thought I’d pass along the rest of playlist.

And of course another BONUS video from the AV Club

LOLLAPALOOZA!

Posted in JANES ADDICTION, LOLLAPALOOZA, NINE INCH NAILS on April 29, 2011 by matthewrubbish

This is pretty cool. Hop on over the the Lollapalooza website and check out the time capsule in celebration of the music festival’s 20th anniversary. Perry Farrell’s vision of an alternative traveling carnival was instrumental in what was to become mainstream over the next few years. Lolloapalooza changed the game and for the first time opened peoples eyes to the power of alternative music and was way ahead of it’s time showcasing diverse acts, side shows and vendors.

The traveling version of the fest hit some lean years in the late 90’s but resurfaced strong in 2003 as a one city mega concert in Chicago. This summer the 3 day event features the return of classic alternative stalwarts Big Audio Dynamite and a slew of current acts. Click HERE to check out the time capsule! Definitely worth it.

And feel free to post some of your Lollapalooza memories from any year. I’d share a few of mine but I they would all involve the story starting out “One year at Lollapalooza, I was really drunk.”
